Abstract

Industrial machinery is frequently driven by electric motors that have provisions for speed adjustment. Speed performance is one of the factors that is closely related to the efficiency of the motor operation. Hence, the need of Switched Reluctance Motor, SRM speed performance to be analyzed and observed is very important. The reason is to ensure the capability of a machine to achieve the performance requirement. A complete closed-loop set of SRM model was analyzed and its speed performance was observed and presented in this thesis. A 60kW, 3-phase (6/4) versatile nonlinear SRM model with a step angle of 30° in Simulink® environment was selected as a test motor. The model was modified by adding in an external speed controller loop. A conventional proportional-integral (Pl) and proportional (P) speed controllers were designed. The proportional and integral parts of controller parameters were well tune at rated operating level where the rotor speed at 3600 rpm and external load torque at 96 Nm. Matlab® Software Package Released 2006a version was used to simulate and evaluate the modified SRM model under various working conditions such as static and dynamic load, step change in speed demand, various setting of switching angles, and variation of motor parameters. Next, the speed performance comparison was made between PI controller and P controller in the static and dynamic load and step change in speed demand. The results that were obtained by the PI controller implemented at rated operating level gave the best speed performance compared to a PI controller that operates at non-operating level. The worst speed performance was presented by a P controller. Setting of switching angle at ( 40°, 85°) gave the best result of speed performance. Meanwhile, for the variations of motor parameters, the doubled-up of the rotor moment of inertia, J and the 30% increase of stator winding resistance, Rs does not significantly affect the motor speed performance.
