Abstract

The concept of equivalent cylinder was introduced due to the complexity in deriving the equation for conical shells. Equivalent cylinder approach has been linked to the buckling of cones under axial compression. This philosophy has been adopted by design codes which differ in the equivalent cylinder radius. Several equivalent cylinder approaches and design were suggested but there is no agreement in choosing the correct equivalent cylinder radius. This research focus on examination of the appropriate equivalent cylinder radius for buckling of cones under axial compression. Thereby, proposing a new approach for determining the most appropriate radius for the equivalent cylinder. In this project, the appropriate equivalent cylinder radius for buckling of cones under axial compression based on both numerical and experimental works is examined. Six cases are considered, including one master cone and five equivalent cylinders with different equivalent cylinder radius. 13 specimens were manufactured, rolled and welded. The dimensions were measured and the specimens were tested under axial compression. The collapsed force of the equivalent cylinder increases as the equivalent cylinder radius increases.
