Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the good suitability composition of the nanoparticle, Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2) and palm oil to be mixed with lube oil to form a lubricant. In this study, palm oil was blended with engine oil and Zirconium Oxide as nanoparticle additive and its lubricating properties were investigated. The volume percentages of mixture composition between palm oil, engine oil and Zirconium Oxide are at 9.95%, 19.90%, 29.85%, 39.80% and 49.75% of palm oil with 0.50% Zirconium Oxide. The test were conducted on the coefficient of friction by using four ball testing machine with accordance of ASTM D4172. The wear scar diameter of the tested ball bearing was observed by using Scanning Electron Microscope. The kinematic viscosity was tested by using viscometer. The result showed that, by mixing 49.75% palm oil, 49.75% engine oil and 0.50% Zirconium Oxide it improves on the wear performance and highest value at kinematic viscosity between the mixtures. However, at composition 9.95% palm oil, 89.55% engine oil and 0.50% Zirconium Oxide it shows the lower coefficient of friction. In conclusion, by mixing the palm oil in the lubricant engine oil with zirconium oxide as nanoparticle additive, it produces better performance.
