Abstract

In this work, the fabrication of Alumina based ceramic by using different sintering profiles was investigated to improve the densification. Generally, alumina based ceramic requires high sintering temperature to improve its densification in order to obtain cutting insert with good mechanical properties. Thus, sintering aids which are Yittria Stabalized Zirconia (YSZ) and Zirconia Chromium Oxide (Cr2O3), sintering are added to reduce sintering temperature and improve densification. Besides that, different sintering profiles were used to enhance performance to produce a cutting tool that has good microstructure, high strength and high density. The effect of sintering profile such as temperature and soaking time were investigated on the properties of Alumina Based Ceramic cutting insert. In this work, the sintering temperature that investigated were 1200℃, 1250℃, 1300℃, 1350℃ and 1400℃ respectively. In order to obtain densified samples at lower sintering temperature, the sintering temperature 1300℃ was selected to sinter with different soaking which are 3 hours, 6 hours and 9 hours respectively. The properties of cutting tool insert including density, strength, microstructure and hardness were tested with various experiment and test. The effect of the sintering temperature and soaking time on microstructure, mechanical properties and relative density of alumina based ceramic was investigated. Based on the result, the relative density increases with increasing sintering temperature. Alumina based ceramic sinter at 1400℃ showed good performace with maximum flexural strength of 88.96 MPa and vickers hardness of 8.91 GPa % was associated with 94.17% densified homogeneous microstructure consisting 5.83% porosity.
