Abstract

Laser machining is the most complex process and yet has the capability of producing excellent finished quality on its end product. Laser machine is one of the machines with highest number of independent controllable parameters in metal cutting industry, and tuning of these parameters in obtaining high degree of dimensional accuracy and the surface quality are becoming priory to cater the need and demand of precision industries. In this present study, S300 stainless steel plate with thickness of 5 mm was cut by a CO2 laser for research investigation purpose. The effect of controllable parameters consisting of gas pressure, frequency and duty cycle on quality of surface roughness are discussed. This process is analyzed and set in order to achieve satisfactory process quality, where, quality examinations in the aspect of surface roughness have been investigated. This project would be used as guideline to handle the laser cutting process more efficiently to obtain a good level of cutting accuracy within the range of experimental values.
