With the existence of modem technologies that require stable power supply, power quality has become a great concern to everyone who is a user. Slight disturbance in the power line can cause havoc either in a factory or a household. Protective devices are used to stabilize the voltage and current. This project presents a system can monitor voltage and current from power line system in real time and· spectrum analyzers such as the periodogram and spectogram are used to capture the power spectrum of each voltage and current variation from power line. The knowledge of digital signal processing is used where Fourier transforms theory is applied to generate the waveforms. The natures of the problems are mainly involved in frequencies and duration of the signal. Different power spectrum represents different power line problem. Therefore, DSP processor TMS320CV5416 is used to sample voltage and current signals and evaluate Fast-Fourier transform. DSP processors offer specialized high-speed arithmetic, multiple access memory architechures, parallel instructions execution, and real world's data transfer. To make it user-friendly, a user interface has been developed using the Visual Basic 6.0 and - display parameters of measurement from power line such as voltage (rms), current (rms), frequency, real power and power factor and present periodogram and spectogram of voltage and current signal. A real time power quality monitoring system employing a commercially available digital signal Processing evaluation board has been demonstrated. The system also exhibits excellent accuracy in calculations.
