Abstract

The summer project is designed to provide an introduction to many of the skills required by electrical engineers. It is divided into 3 parts, namely Part 1 - Literature Review on switched reluctance motors - the history of their development, their application to domestic goods, industry and other areas, research areas including noise reduction, efficiency, improved dynamic performance etc. Part 2 - The Design, Build, Test and Optimisation of a DSP Controlled Switched Reluctance Motor Part 3 - Design and Simulation Exercise The project contributes 60 credits to your MSc. This means that you are expected to work for 450 hours on the project, which will break down approximately to Parts 1 and 2 - 350 hours (30 hours for literature review, 20 hours for familiarisation with the DSP and introductory exercises, 20 hours for familiarisation with SR motor and its control, 140 hours for design, build and experimentation, 40 hours for report writing). These two parts combined will contribute 75% of the total mark. Part 3 - 100 hours (20 hours familiarisation with Matlab and Simulink and background reading of the subject, SO hours for controller design, simulation and evaluation and 30 hours for report writing). This part will contribute 25% of the final mark.
