Abstract

The purposes of this project are to determine the ventilated disc brake transient temperature and to examine its thermal stress behaviour using finite element analysis (FEA) software. This project also aims to analyse the disc deformation or coning angle caused by thermal expansion of the disc. The finite element analysis software which is A SYS Version 9.0 is used to analyse the temperature and thermal stress behaviour under particular periodic braking operation. An existing model of ventilated disc brake is created in CATlA V5 program and exported into ANSYS Version 9.0 in order to examine the transient temperature and thermal stress results of the ventilated disc. Only one forty fraction of the disc brake model is used in this project. The maximum disc transient temperature has been determined and occurred at tenth cycle. The maximum thermal stress occurred in the disc is relatively small compared to the maximum strength of the disc. Thermal expansion of the disc only caused a very low coning angle.
