Abstract

Fibreglass laminated composites are widely used in application due to their low cost and easy to fabricate especially using hand lay-up technique. In this research, fibreglass laminated composites properties are investigated under different environment conditions. The composites are fabricated using hand lay-up technique and cut to specimen's size according to ASTM E23 for Charpy test and ASTM D3039 for tensile test. The specimens are put under different environment conditions such as under different temperature range from room temperature to 55 °C, under UV light and also tested its resistance against distilled water, sea water, river water, acid and alkaline solution. Unexposed specimens of same parameter were used as a baseline for comparison specimens. The effects of different environment conditions on the toughness and strength of fiberglass laminated composite specimens are studied. Results shown that the impact energy of E-glass/polyester [0/90] specimens decreased with increasing testing temperature but their ultimate tensile strength is not significantly changed with the same temperature variation. It was found that the specimens immersed in all used solutions decreased both impact energy and ultimate tensile strength. Specimens in acid solution has the highest, followed by sea water, alkaline solution, river water, whereas distilled water has the lowest values.
