Abstract

The environmental concern has bring the idea to the author to explore the possibility of using the water as the hydraulic medium to transfer fluid power. There are several limitations for usage of water in the hydraulic power system. Its low boiling temperature, its low viscosity, its simple molecular structure could pose danger to the operation of the hydraulic system. In order to identify these limitations, an experimental study was carried out to explore the possibility of reducing these problem. A test rig of a scissor lift was fabricated and put into test by replacing the hydraulic oil with the Reverse Osmosis water. The test was conducted by lifting and lowering the scissor lift untuil it reached the condition where the water pressure measured by the pressure gauge starting to lower down. From the results obtained, it is found that the maximum loading that the water hydraulic scissor lift can lift is only up to 400kg only which is about 4000N. The maximum temperature that the water hydraulic can operate is about 40 degree Celcius. There are various modifications required to be done onto the oil hydraulic system if we want to convert it into water hydraulic system especially on the components materials, all components materials must be made of stainless or non-rusty material as the water is the best corrosion agent.
