Abstract

At present, bio-lubricant have been studied to substitute mineral oil as machinery lubricants. However, with the existence of poly unsaturated fatty acids in vegetable oil causing bio-lubricants prone to oxidation. As such, introduction of antioxidants is deemed necessary in order to suppress oxidation. This study is to investigate the feasibility of developing a newly bio-lubricant using commercialized cooking corn oil with addition of Zinc Diamyldithiocarbamate (ZDDC) as physical property improver. Introduction of ZDDC into corn oil uses direct introduction method with concentration of 0 wt%, 1 wt%, 2 wt%, 3 wt% and 4 wt%. Samples were tested for its kinematic viscosity and metal content by using ASTM test methods and characterized by using Four Ball tester and Laser Microscope. Results demonstrated that the addition of ZDDC with concentration of 2 wt% possessed the desirable kinematic viscosity value at 36.10 cSt and lowest coefficient of friction at 0.081 among the prepared samples. However, it seen that at concentration of 5 wt% give higher value at 40.00 cSt for kinematic viscosity. It can be conclude that the new bio-lubricant is successfully developed by incorporating ZDDC at different concentration into commercialized cooking corn oil.
