Process Modeling is one of the essential parts in software development. It produces a formal or semi-formal representation of process from different views. There exist a number of useful Process Modeling Languages (PMLs) for organizations to use in modeling the process such as Petri Net, Workflow Systems, Unified Process Model etc. Even the Unified Modeling Language (UML) is not specially created for process modeling, more and more systems now are being expressed with UML notation. This is because Object Modeling Group (OMG) has accepted the UML as a standard object modeling language in Object-Oriented/Component Based Development (00/CBD). With the existing of 00/CBD optimal technology, organization should have enough guideline in helping them to create their own process component from existing process component by use of the process engineering technique such as the UML. In order to successful modeling the process component, organization should know how to use the diagram already available in UML as well as to extend them for process description. The focus of this project is to describe on both theoretical and practical aspects an approach for modeling the process using the UML. The theoretical aspect aims to provide the process modeling guidelines by identifying the major process characteristics and UML diagrams that can be used to model the process. In order to generate the guideline, some existing PMLs are explored to observe the different notations that can be used to model the process as well as to identify the advantages of UML compare than other modeling languages. As a result, a case study is presented as the practical implementation to demonstrate the guidelines provided using UML modeling tool, the Rational Rose. The web application for the case study will also be implemented in the case study being based the design deliverables. An evaluation and conclusions on the effectiveness and usejitlness of the process modeling guidelines provided for organizations in 00/CBD technology will be drawn from the use of the UML in the case study.
