This thesis presents an investigation into the application of ultrasonic sensors for tomographic imaging system. Tomographic imaging can provide images of a cross section of pipe and thus information inside the pipe can be extracted. The aims of the project are to obtain the concentration profiles and velocity when objects are dropped through the sensing area of the pipe. To measure the velocity, cross correlation technique was used where 2 pair of sensors are mounted upstream and downstream. Cross correlation is a process of comparing a signal with another signal by multiplication of the instantaneous values and taking the average. The transit time that obtained from this technique will be used to measure the velocity if the distance between upstream and downstream is known. The concentration measurement involves obtaining the distribution of object in the pipe. In this project, are eight pairs of sensors were used. Each pair of transmitters and receivers are placed opposite and facing each other in an orthogonal manner. The linear back projection algorithm was used to find the concentration profile. By using this algorithm, the concentration profile is described by the summation of the product between the sensor value and its sensitivity map. For this experiment, it is assumed that the signal wave is in the straight ray propagation. This thesis also focuses on the software development using Visual Basic 6.0 to determine the velocities and images of concentration. The data is colleted using data acquisition system and it was an offline process. The results from the research of this project show that the velocity and concentration can be measured using ultrasonic sensors. From the result of the concentration measurement method to reduce the noise was identified. Suggestions for future work are made.
