Abstract

Arcing fault on underground cables does not occur frequently but can draw a considerable amount of electrical energy from the system if they are not detected and isolated promptly. The energy is dissipated into the environment in various forms and as a result, the safety of the public and utility workers may be jeopardized. The problem is, detection of arcing faults maybe difficult using standard over current protections because some arcing faults generate relatively low currents. Because of this problem, a research need to be done about how these arcing faults can be detected and cleared from the beginning before it can cause more damage to underground cable. This project aims to obtain a set of current waveform for arcing fault conditions that occur in underground cables on mock-up experimental set-up. As a mock-up set-up, 11 KV cable was replaced by 240V, XLPE cable, which is connected to a transformer, and then to the load. The fault is created by piercing the insulator of the cable, and the injured cable is placed in wet soil. These samples of arcing fault measurement will be used later to develop software that can detect arcing fault in underground cable from the initial stage.
