There has been little change in the design of the manual wheelchairs over the last decade. Manual wheelchairs are complex systems and wheelchair design can limit independence and accessibility. Therefore the aims of this project is to enhance the quality of life in order to offer wheelchair users more independence in daily activities and improve their physically. This project describes preliminary research of transfer problems among individuals who use manual wheelchairs. Important issues investigated in this project include the existing product of manual wheelchair, wheelchair questionnaire to determine the prevalence of transferring from or into a wheelchair as a problem and types of transfers that normally wheelchair users have been practiced when they're transferring from or into a wheelchair. The project also described the design process such as the product design specification, ideation and development process, the stability of the wheelchair, material selection, manufacturing process and the maintenance of wheelchair. Further development of the project investigated and analyzed the effectiveness of a new design that includes the structure of frame, elevating seat principle, driving components such handrim and caster, material used and manufacturing process.
