Abstract

The purpose of this study was to preliminary design the crossflow turbine for 5 m head by investigating the water flow behavior. Through this study, a computational fluid dynamics study was performed and the flow characteristics within the turbine was analyzed. The turbine was geometrically modeled. The transient flow was set up as such that k-ε model was selected to present the turbulent flow within the turbine area. The velocity distributions and the flow separations were predicted, and the first and second stages flow were observed within the turbine area. As the runner’s rotation increased from 300 to 800 rpm, the first and second stages were stretched out to longer distances, and the speeding area became wider.
