Abstract

Storage protocols are essential in experimental studies of articular cartilage. There were various storage temperatures used, and conflicting results on cartilage properties were observed. This study aimed to examine the effect of storage temperature on the biomechanical properties of articular cartilage. Bovine hip joints were stored at 4 and − 20 °C. The cartilage specimen was extracted to perform indentation test and characterise the permeability and elastic modulus. Significant difference in the biomechanical properties of the frozen cartilage was found compared to fresh cartilage.
