Abstract

Sleep and academic performance are key motivators for the employability of students in the job market. This study is to identify the significance of demographic factors on academic performance and sleep quality among young female engineers and technologists (YET). The instrument used is The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The study population and sample consist of female YET, with 222 females YET respondents. The sampling method used is convenience sampling. The demographic findings show that the highest of respondents are Muslim (73.0%), 89.2% live in residential colleges, and CGPAs range from 3.01 to 3.50, which is 47.3% (mean = 3.95). Findings related to sleep quality reveal that students are in the category of having difficulty sleeping at 74.3%. Correlation analysis finds a very weak significant relationship between the religion factor and academic performance, with r = 0.295; p < 0.01 = 0.0001. Findings show that the religion factor has a very weak significant negative relationship with sleep quality, with r = -0.147; p < 0.05 = 0.028. Correlation analysis also finds no significant relationship between the residential college factor and academic performance (r = -0.109; p > 0.05 = 0.105) and sleep quality (r = -0.064; p > 0.05 = 0.344), and no significant relationship between academic performance and sleep quality (r = 0.009; p > 0.05 = 0.891) among female YET. The results of this study indicate that the religion factor plays an important role in academic performance and sleep quality among female YET.
