Abstract

This book highlights a specific type of corpus for language learning and research: the learner corpus. A learner corpus consists of written or spoken texts produced by second or foreign language learners and is used to analyse language patterns, errors, and developmental stages of language acquisition. This book demonstrates the construction and application of a learner corpus - the Academic Writing Learner Corpus (AWLC). The AWLC collects academic writing samples from students across various disciplines. at a technical university in Malaysia. The AWLC aims to represent the language used by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learners, especially in TVET and STEM education. Additionally, this book aims to guide readers in using data from a learner corpus to understand the language development process and tailor instructions to address leamers' specific needs in academic writing. This book is suitable for language practitioners, particularly of the ESP community in Malaysia, such as those in TVET and STEM education (technical universities, polytechnics, community colleges, vocational colleges, and technical secondary schools). This book is also suitable for undergraduates and postgraduates of TESL or English Studies programs of higher learning institutions.
