Abstract

The rematntng gap available in inspection technology is for mesoscale components. It is attempted to perform this type of measurement by using one of the available measurement equipments. The laser scanning device that is attached to the CMM becomes a choice in inspecting compared to touch as its drawback in measuring small, fragile and flexible components. In this project, the inspections capability of the available laser scanner is tested for small and mesoscale components. Slip gauges with sizes of 10000, 5000 and 500 J..lm will represent the workpieces. The study is based on the extrinsic parameters that contain different levels of setting \ hich can be setup by using the manufacturer software. The investigation is also focused on the effect of workpiece preparation to the small components prior to measurement. The design of experiment using Taguchi methods is used to minimize the length of experimental work and to obtained appropriate effects of various parameters and their corresponding levels. The experimental results are analyzed by adopting the level average analysis, whereby the behavior and interaction of the parameters is studied. A programme was developed to detect edges of the workpieces through the cloud of points, hence measuring distances. The measurement results from the laser scanner are compared to the measurement results from the CCD camera. Between these measurement methods, the best setting and the induced errors in vestigated. The settings that give minimum errors in each method are proposed and for the laser scanner the proposed setting is tested with the actual mesoscale components. It is found that the laser scanner LC 15 is not suitable for mesoscale inspection.
