Tooling nowadays is very important in product development. The accuracy, durability, finishing and the amount of parts that a tool can produce affect the production. Tools manufactured by conventional methods usually offer good quality of the product but the cost of these tools could be up to hundreds pound and the time required for their manufacture up to months. This study investigates the surface finish, dimensional accuracy, flatness and straightness of the parts produced using SLA in rapid tooling application. A small and simple geometry, core box, riser and runner were designed in the Pro Engineer software and then built in the Stereo lithography Apparatus (SLA). The geometry was used as a pattern for the cavity of the RTV silicone mould (tool). The mould cavity then was used for casting. By pouring casting resin (Fast Cast Polyurethane) into it, 20 duplicates pattern were produced using the single mould. Making use of the appropriate equipment, the quality of the products in terms of dimensional accuracy, surface finish, flatness and straightness was assessed. The dimensional accuracy of the products was measured using a Digital Vernier Calliper. The Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) measured the flatness and straightness. The Mitutoyo CV 500 Contour Measuring Instrument measured the surface finish of the parts. Results show that there are significant effect on surface finish, dimensional accuracy and flatness as more parts are produced using the silicone mould.
