Abstract

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technjque was used to simulate the external flow analysis of a coach. The simulation was based on a steady state formulation with the focus to assess the capabilities of a CFD tool for aerodynamic development of a coach. The comparisons to verify the coach model were made between the CFD simulation and the experiment. It was found that prediction of the drag coefficient obtained from the CFD is very close to the corresponding measured in experiment. Besides, the surface pressure distributions are reasonably well compared to the experiment. In term of flow visualization, the CFD tool managed to reveal the behaviour of the flow, i.e. separation, reattachment and wake. Thls suggests that the steady state CFD simulation can be used to boost the aerodynamic development of a coach.
