Abstract

Many utilities have been using acquisition devices at substations which record voltage, current and logical signals directly from digital protective relays and digital fault recorders (DFRs). The record contains digitized records of voltage and current waveforms in different proprietary formats. COMTRADE is a standard which defines the format for the exchange of electrical power system transient data files such as from DFRs and digital protective relays. This project was using the distance relay COMTRADE format record from TNB-Transmission. A program is developed in this project which implements the relaying algorithm, one-cycle Cosine filter to digitally filter out the unwanted signals at system's fundamental frequency from COMTRADE format data. The process of extracting the information from sample value data is described. The extracted parameters such as phasor current and phasor voltage are used for other types of parameters calculation, such as symmetrical components and apparent impedance of the protected line. The results are compared with Siemens relay analysis software, which uses Fourier filter as the digital filter, and the results are very close to each other.
