Abstract

In automotive body assembly, self-piercing riveting (SPR) has become one of important joining techniques. In order to understand further about the SPR process and its joint behaviour, this project examined the effects of sheet material coatings on quality and mechanical behaviour of SPR joints. Electrical coating (E-coat) and zinc plate coating were used in this study. The coatings were applied on High Strength Low Alloy 350 (HSLA 350) surfaces and were joined with aluminium alloy (NG5754). The NG5754 was set as top layer whereas HSLA 350 was set as the bottom layer. This project observed that the joint quality and strength were dependent on the material coatings. The presence of coatings led to lower head high, bigger mechanical interlock and smaller remaining material of SPR joints. These were attributed to resistance experienced by rivet during penetration and flaring. The amount of resistance was different between coated and uncoated materials. The coated materials introduced smooth surfaces and therefore the rivets experienced less resistance. In addition, the project also proved that the coatings affected the strength values and failure modes. Different failure modes and different strength values were observed for coated and uncoated samples.
