Abstract

The work reported here is the powertrain engine timing gear contact analysis - the noise analysis using non-linear finite element method (FEM). The objectives were to minimize the gear rim thickness, to validate the FEM using existing theory and to investigate load effects on transmission error. Finite element analysis software, ABAQUS is used to simulate the mechanical contact of the mating gears. Stress contours, maximum stresses and root stresses on the contact gear teeth were observed and studied. The analysis used principles of linear elastic isotropic mechanics. Quadrilateral plain strain elements, free technique, advancing front algorithm were used on the gear mesh to represent the stress singularity. The analyses included mesh refinement, number of teeth reduction, rim thickness reduction and transmission error. The results obtained from FEM analyses are compared and validated b ' theoretical calculations using Lewis and AGMA stresses formulae. The optimized rim thickness is between 6.00 mm to 7.00 mm. The variation of transmission error (main source of noise) of the gears is studied due to different torques and rim thicknesses. Low rim thickness and high torque produce high transmission error of mating gears.
