Abstract

Growing environmental concern and increasing responsibility towards product stewardship lead many companies to institute new concepts and methodologies to improve environmental performance of their products and processes. A key driving force is that European countries have begun to enact new laws and regulations requiring product take back and resource recovery. Besides legislation, high production rate and rapid obsolescence especially of electronic goods have lead to new business opportunities in the area of reuse. Remanufacturing in comparison to other strategies offers a big chance for sustainable development due to the high rate of reused products and components. With a prognosis of 90% penetration in the monitor market with flat screen technology by 2010, product returns will be sufficient to develop remanufacturing activities at large scale. Due to the high wage in countries with a high amount of returned products, automation efforts become more and more necessary. The planning of remanufacturing systems and facilities especially involving automation is more complex than the planning of assembly systems. Therefore, flexible and systematic solutions for planning tasks are needed. Simulation already satisfied in analyzing and evaluating of assembly and disassembly systems, and therefore serves as evaluation tool for remanufacturing system and facilities. In context of this thesis, robotic and workplace simulation is utilized in planning, evaluation and realization of the flexible remanufacturing system. The simulation model is used in order to create, generate and evaluate a control logic program of the system. The simulation model of remanufacturing system is developed by utilizing Tecnomatix eM-Engineer. With the help of Siemens product package STEP 7 Professional, the control logic program of the model is tested in virtual commissioning. After iterative improvement steps, the improved control logic program is implemented in the real system.
