Abstract

Reverse engineering (RE) in combination with computer aided design/ computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) or rapid prototyping (RP) technology has been widely used in automotive and aerospace industries. Today this integrated technology as a whole has been recognized for it application in medicine and dentistry. In addition, all ceramic dental restoration has become the alternative to porcelain-fused-metal (PFM) crown due to strength and aesthetic consolidated within bio-ceramic materials. This dissertation documents the design and manufacturing phases on the development of all ceramic dental restorations through the state-of-the-art RE/CAD/CAM and RP technologies. Results from the observations and studies obtained from literature search and industrial visit to dental laboratory have been used to outline the manufacturing process flow of dental restoration of conventional PFM method, and modern CAD/CAM and RP issues i.e process and material, shrinkage factor, data acquisition systems, etc. This has been devised and comprehensively presented in chapters 6,7, and 8. The information derived from the literatures and visit has been finalised and vconcluded. It has been found that RE together with CAD/CAM and/or RP does accelerate the entire manufacturing process by eliminating the painstaking task in conventional method for manufacture dental restorations. In dentistry, together the technologies offer edentulous patient or customer the all-ceramic dental restoration for aesthetic purposes that worth buying/ having.
