Abstract

Image sharpening or enhancement improves the quality of images not only for human viewing but also for analysis. Neurite tracing is done to calculate the growth of neurons (axon and dendrite growth) which is important in the study of neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease and multi sclerosis). In this thesis, problems in neuron images i.e, clouds, oroken neurites and intensity differences which often occur' interrupt the neurite tracing and its analysis. Morphological algorithms such as histogram equalization, dilation, closing are applied to enhance the neuron images. Complex linear diffusion ( CLD) is then applied to sharpen the lines of the neurons. The results show that the problems of neurons images are able to be tackled using the morphological algorithm and CLD.
