Abstract

This report presents the machining of SKD 11 tool steel using electrical discharge machining (EDM) with a graphite electrode. The effectiveness of the EDM process is evaluated in terms of material removal rate (MRR), electrodes wear (EW),surface roughness (SR) and surface hardness (SH). In this work, a study was carried out on the influence of peak current (Ip), voltage (V), pulse on-time (ti) and pulse offtime(to). The technique of Design of Experiments (DOE) has been used for the planning of the experiments. The experimental results reveal that the most significant factor that influence material removal rate is pulse on-time, followed by peak current and interaction between peak current and pulse on-time. Furthermore, in order to obtain low values of electrode wear, low values of peak current and voltage should be used. The results also indicate that the value of surface roughness tends to increase when the pulse on-time, peak current and voltage are increased. In the case of surface hardness, it has been found that there was no significant different between the hardness of the EDM surface and non-EDM surface for the workpiece SKD 11 tool steel under all EDM conditions.
