Abstract

At present, the practice of Islam among Muslim engineers is deemed essential because it can have an impact on their leadership style. Application of good leadership style can also contribute significantly to the development of a nation and its infrastructure. This study examines the relationship between religious practices of Islam and Muslim engineers’ leadership style (autocratic and democratic leadership style) in the state of Malacca. This study is based on surveys and questionnaires. The reliabilities of the instrument were determined by means of Alpha Cronbach (0.803). A total of 340 Muslim engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is selected using purposive sampling (purposive sampling) and random sampling (simple random sampling) as the sample of studies. The data gathered were analyzed using SPSS Statistical Packages for Social Science 22.0 (SPSS 22.0). The analysis revealed that the level of Islamic practices among the Muslim engineers in the state of Malacca from the three aspects such as faith, worship and morality is good (100%). While the analysis of autocratic leadership style showed that Muslim engineers’ autocratic leadership style was at the intermediate level. Unlike autocratic leadership style, the level of democratic leadership style was at a high level. Based on Pearson correlation test, the results showed that faith had a significant relationship in autocratic leadership style, but the correlation was in the moderate level (r = -.366, p = .000). The findings of this study also revealed that there was no significant relationship between worship with autocratic leadership style (r = -.047, p = .388). The findings also showed that the morality had a significant and moderate correlation with autocratic leadership style (r = -.325, p = .000). Faith, on the other hand, had a significant and moderate correlation with democratic leadership style (r = .320, p = .000). The results presented that there was no significant relationship between worship with democratic leadership style (r = .067, p = .234). The study indicated that a significant relationship with democratic leadership style but the correlation was at the moderate level (r = .301, p = .000). Multiple regression analysis (stepwise) showed that the practice of Islam by Muslim engineers inversely contributed 19.8% to the autocratic leadership style, while the contribution of Islamic religious practices of democratic leadership style was by 15.3%. This study also indicated that the democratic leadership style (M = 4.5550) was practiced more dominantly as compared to the autocratic leadership style (M = 2.7459) among Muslim engineers in Malacca
