Abstract
The paper will discuss findings from a series of case studies undertaken with innovative small to medium sized enterprises (SME) in the Information and communications technology (ICT) sector in Western Australia. The paper explores the inter-relationship between leadership and innovation within these firms, and provides insights and lessons for both enhancing our understanding of the managerial task environment of high-innovator SME. A multiple case study methodology was employed where in-depth interviews and archival analysis of the firms were used as data collection tools. It is found that the quality of leadership is important in influencing innovation activity in the firms. The leaders will have a profound impact on how an organization adapts to the changes in the environment. The ability of the leader to select the best strategy suited to his or her style will enhance the innovativeness and innovation performance of the organization.
