Abstract

Laser cutting is one of the processes in laser machining besides encompassing laser drilling, laser marking, laser grooving and laser engraving. This process is broadly used in industries as a result for the advantages which consist of extensive machining potential, flexibility and high accuracy as well as precision in manufacturing simple or complex design components. In the present study, DIN 17155 HII Mn-Mo vessel plate with thickness 2.5 mm and 5 mm were cut by a CO2 laser for research investigation purpose. The effects of controllable parameters consisting of Stand off Distance, focal distance, gas pressure, power, cutting speed, frequency and duty cycle on quality of surface roughness are discussed. These parameters were studied to produce an almost perfect cutting of surface roughness on the vessel material to meet the laser cut quality standard requirement of the project. This process is analyzed and set in order to achieve satisfactory process quality, where, quality examinations in the aspect of surface roughness have been investigated. This project would be used as guideline to handle the laser cutting process more efficiently to obtain a good level of cutting accuracy within the range of experimental values.
