Abstract

Conducting an energy audit in academic buildings which are directly focused on the lighting system and air conditioning system. To analyze and identify the energy consumption and efficiency of the academic building in Kolej Komuniti Tasek Gelugor is the main study throughout this project. Data collection includes the lighting intensity measurement and energy calculation comparison. Almost 25% of the energy consumption at campus is from the lighting usage and 60% more contributed from air conditioning usage. The saving created by lighting retrofitting is RM 8987.00 and base on the pay-back period calculated to be 6 months of return of the investment (ROI). For air conditioning system, the no-cost retrofitting procedure 10% consumption saving with 13461.4 kWh of saving. The highest saving can be achieved with “DROP IN” procedure of retrofitting procedure with 30% future electrical consumption reduced. The calculations showed that the Building Energy Index is 112.5 kWh/m2/year. The greatest BEI practice and recommended by Malaysian Standard (MS 1525) is 275 kWh /m*year. Thus, Kolej Komuniti Tasek Gelugor energy index is lower compared to recommended standards.
