Abstract
Oil palm shell is an agricultural waste material found abundantly in Malaysia. This material has potential value that can be converted into useful and valuable product. This research, the concern is to make use of oil palm shell to prepare the carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Since the characteristics of oil palm shell was found suitable for preparing activated carbon, this material also has the potential to be prepared into CMS. This CMS was prepared at a laboratory scale fixed-bed reactor, which is blanketed by a vertical furnace where pyrolysis took place. Nitrogen gas was used to obtain an inert atmosphere in the reactor. A suction blower was used to remove volatile matter as well as other gases during carbonisation process. The char was collected and modified by CO2 activation, and the other char was mixed with chemical agents such as phenol, formaldehyde, and bituminous compound. By using the molecular probe technique for characterizing the CMS from oil palm shell, it exhibits a reducing micropore volume in correspondence with increasing pore size. Finally, the adsorption isotherm between CO2 and CH4 , and the breakthrough curve of CO2 and CH4 that obtained by gas chromatography with thermal conductivity detector, were conducted to analyse this CMS. It is found that all samples more adsorb CO2 than CH4 , and the char prepared at 900 degC shows the highest adsorption selectivity between CO2 and CH4, hence it is expected to be useful for the separation of CH4 from CO2 . Therefore, this research will constitute a solution to solve the environmental problems and industrial aspect of adsorption separation process.
