Abstract

Muslims have been depending on the Halal logo displayed on product packaging or premises to indicate whether the products are prepared according to Halal precepts. However, due to the strict procedures legislated by the department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) in Malaysia, manufacturers may sometimes option to display fake logo or to apply Halal logo from private companies in order to show that their products are Halal. To banish that activity, JAKIM has released an act to standardize the Halal logo that is only awarded by JAKIM. In this paper, a method on validating Halal status for products or premise using logo identification algorithm through Smartphone is proposed. The proposed Halal logo identification algorithm is compared with the speeded-up robust feature (SURF) and feature from accelerated segment test (FAST) algorithm. All algorithms are executed on the smartphone and experimented using the smartphone camera. The result shows that the proposed method achieved a sensitivity of 100% whereas SURF and FAST achieved 34% and 30%, respectively.
